A town struck by darkness, a town so gray. Can we stop the hurtin’, maybe one day? Blacks and whites can’t be together. They are just as bad as the stormy weather. Them white folks won’t sell to those blacks, And I’m just tellin’ the facts. Blacks and whites can’t drink the same water, How is a man supposed to explain this to his daughter? When I witness this separation it makes me feel hurt, Them white treat them blacks like they are dirt. I can’t imagine being in this town, I think that I would be afraid to make a sound. The different colors aren’t allowed to wait in the same place Why must everyone be judged on their race. Both blacks and whites are good at the heart, But they are judged on a different part. That part is the color of their skin, It would be much easier if everyone was just tin.

You see the buildings as high as the mountian top,
And people just take their time walking on by.
Many of them have bags from when they would stop,
But others are upset and have a great sigh.
You may have warm feelings when you walk down this street,
Since there is always stuff to do so there is no seat.
The cool breeze by the river hits your face,
That makes you feel relaxed and calm.
You see the boats drive by as if they are in a slow race,
They get so far away that it looks like you can fit them on your palm.
Life then could be hard and sad at times,
But make the best of it and follow good signs.
When you first see the town it seems pretty nice,
But you haven't quite seen the rural part.
It may look damage, they may have mice,
But through it all they stayed pretty smart.
You know the depression is a hard time,
And they managed to get money and not commit a crime.
As you walk down the street of this town and any,
You will see signs that read black and white.
Also some people with not even a penny,
But they try their best to make everything right.
Some roads are broken and stores smashed open.
It doesn't even seem like anyone has spoken.
As you can see some things about this town will make you love it,
While others will make you think it is a negative place.
You see other people have a rural home with no place to sit,
But you see other homes have a very big space.
Negro's in this town don't get treated that fair,
Some people could change that but it is very rare.

A town struck by darkness, a town so grey.
Can we stop the hurtin', maybe one day?
Blacks and whites can't be together.
They are just as bad as the stormy weather.
When you first see the town it seems pretty nice,
But you then see run down buildings which could have mice.
You know the depression is a hard time,
And some people can barely spare a dime.
Blacks and whites can’t drink the same water, How is a man supposed to explain this to his daughter? When I witness this separation it makes me feel hurt, Them white treat them blacks like they are dirt. As you can see some things about this town will make you love it,

But you see other homes have a very big space.
As you walk down the streets of this town and any,
You will see people that can't buy anything for even a penny.
There are signs that read black and white,
All people want is to make everything right.
Both blacks and whites are good at heart,
But they are judged on a different part.
That part is the color of their skin,
It would be easier if everyone was just tin.
